Environment
Diehl sustainably pursues the goal to continuously improve development, production and logistics with new ideas so that ecological issues, too, are pushed ahead within the company. In the reporting period, Diehl Metall‘s presentation of the ecologically valuable „Cuphin" alloy - a lead-free copper material for drinking-water applications – was of special importance. Besides, there were innumerable major and minor improvements in the operations of workshops and offices worth mentioning. Diehl supports this trend because it strengthens operational processes and is in conformity with the company‘s ecological objectives. The measures taken again concentrated on the fulfillment of environmental objectives most of which we have set ourselves, especially in the field of energy and water saving as well as the reduction of waste water and exhaust-air emissions. Diehl Metall at Röthenbach, for example, reduced its energy consumption from 31 mil-lion kWh/year by 22 percent to 24 million kWh/year through optimized capacity utilization in conjunction with a new bolt heater for rod and tube manufacturing. As a result, approx. 1,400 tons less of carbon dioxide are now emitted into the air. Through capital spent on the tin-coating installation, Sundwiger Messingwerk was able to reduce its noise and dust emissions distinctly. OTB in Berlin and IWS in Freisen also invested in new installations to further reduce fresh-water consumption at these locations. Diehl Aircabin in Laupheim plans to replace the solvent-containing separating agents on all presses with water-based ones in the future. An initial test phase has already been successful. It has, of course, long since been standard practice to take appropriate heat insulation measures when buildings have to be renovated. This was also the case at our Mariahütte and Maasberg sites as well as at AKO in Wangen. The heating energy requirement of a production building at Hydrometer in Ansbach could be reduced considerably through the installation of an energetically highly efficient roofing system. In addition to such concrete improvements, integration of quality, environmental as well as industrial safety and health management was further pushed ahead so that all environment-relevant processes can be monitored continuously. In this way, we enhance our employees‘ personal sense of responsibility and get them even more involved in shaping environment-relevant processes. |
